Ruji Yan Temple is an ancient sanctuary nestled deep within the mountains of Nan'an. Carved by wind, rain, and the rugged face of stone, it has remained hidden through shadow and the passing of dynasties. From the silent trace of vermilion still lingering upon its Buddha statues, one senses a quiet anticipation—as though the temple has long been waiting for the return of its faithful.

The main hall is composed of two levels. The lower level reveals a natural cavernous chamber, formed from weathered rock, with a sloping stone ceiling that evokes both grandeur and solemnity. On the first level stands a roughly six-foot statue of Amitābha Buddha, believed to have been created during the Northern Song Dynasty. To its left lies the Xiaoshen Cave, housing a Song Dynasty statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva, serene and contemplative in presence.

The second level forms the spiritual heart of the temple. There, emerging organically from the living cliff face, is a towering eight-foot image of Amitābha Buddha, one hand lowered in grace, the other gently raised in a sacred mudra. Yet the statue’s frontal features were entirely chiseled away during the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s, leaving behind only fragments of its former dignity.

Here, through 3D reconstruction and restoration in the Unity engine, we seek to give form once more to what history has worn away—to restore not only the image, but also a fragment of memory carved into stone.
